Hollywood star Jon Boyega is widely recognized for his stellar interpretation of “Finn” in the popular Star Wars franchise. The British-Nigerian actor has been a hit ever since the movie was released in 2019; earning him major sponsorship deals.  Boyega took to twitter yesterday to announce that he is parting ways with one of those deals.

Jon made an announcement on twitter yesterday at 11:44pm stating that he has officially resigned from his role as global ambassador for perfume company Jo Malone; on a basis described as alleged racism. Boyega said “I created the short film we used to launch the campaign. It won the Fragrance Foundation Virtual awards 2020 for Best Media Campaign.” Jo Malone Britain replaced Boyega and the rest of the cast with Asian actors but kept the concept and script to be reshot for the Asian market.

Boyega  went on to say “The film celebrated my personal story showcasing my hometown, including my friends and featuring my family. It’s back to back but I assure you this will be dealt with swiftly. I don’t have time for nonsense”.

His actions pommeled the perfume companies’ image and forced Estee Lauders team to remove the advert from its campaign in china and issue a statement of apology to Boyega. The company told The Hollywood Reporter that “The concept for the film was based on John’s personal experiences and should not have been replicated… we recognize that this was painful and that offence was caused…we are working together as a brand to do better moving forward. The statement was issued along with the swift removal of the advert from the campaign in china.

Jon Boyega is an exemplary figure in the fight for racial inequality. His actions are urging the black community not give an inch to racial discrimination. And like the British-Nigerian, the black community should not take nonsense.
