Tina Knowles, Beyoncé’s mother, has revealed her recent battle with stage 1 breast cancer. The 71-year-old fashion entrepreneur discovered the diagnosis after postponing a mammogram appointment. When she finally went in, doctors found two tumors in her left breast—one benign and the other cancerous.

She underwent a successful lumpectomy in August and is now cancer-free. However, she faced complications after surgery, including a serious infection that nearly kept her from attending Glamour’s 2024 Women of the Year event, where she was honored.
Speaking during an interview for her new book, Matriarch, Knowles said she initially hesitated to share her diagnosis but ultimately chose to do so to help other women. “We get so busy that we forget to take care of ourselves,” she said. “If I hadn’t gone in when I did, it could’ve been worse.”
Her daughters rallied around her, offering love and optimism. Beyoncé encouraged her to skip the event for her health, but Knowles insisted on attending. “This time, I wanted to accept recognition and say, ‘I deserve this,’” she explained.
With no family history of breast cancer or the BRCA gene, the diagnosis came as a shock. But Knowles now feels stronger, grateful, and determined to inspire others to stay on top of their health checks.
