Nigerian Highlife veteran Bright Chimezie is receiving well-deserved recognition for inspiring a new generation of Afrobeats stars. The legendary artist recently praised Davido and Omah Lay for their collaborative track With You, which creatively was inspired by his iconic 1980s classic, Because of English.
In a joyful Instagram video, Chimezie danced with pride as the track played in the background. “You can see I’m already vibing to the song. It’s a beautiful piece of work, very wonderful,” he shared. “I truly appreciate that you mentioned drawing inspiration from this song I recorded many years ago.”
His heartfelt reaction also quickly went viral, touching fans who grew up on his music and introducing his sound to a new audience.
Davido responded with deep respect, commenting in Igbo: “Ihe di ka gi akokwala m. Chief Sir Bright Chimezie, Ezigbote Onye Egwu,” which means “People like you inspire me. Chief Sir Bright Chimezie, a true music legend.”
With You, produced by hitmaker Tempoe, appears on Davido’s fifth studio album. The track blends Highlife and Funk, drawing on the rhythmic roots Chimezie helped define in Nigeria’s music scene of the 70s and 80s.
