9mobile is set to kick off national roaming services on MTN Nigeria’s network in June 2025. This follows the long-awaited approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), marking a big win for the struggling telecom operator.

With this new development, 9mobile subscribers can now enjoy better coverage by connecting to MTN’s infrastructure in areas where 9mobile’s own network is weak or missing. This means users can make calls, send texts, and access mobile data even outside 9mobile’s regular coverage zones.

The journey to this rollout began in 2020, when 9mobile and MTN ran a pilot program for national roaming. Although the three-month trial ended that same year, the full rollout was delayed—until now.

9mobile's market share decline from 2020 to April 2025(9mobile)

9mobile’s market share has dropped sharply from 6.6% in 2020 to just 1.72% in April 2025. This new partnership could help the company win back users. As one telecom executive explained, “Now that 9mobile will have access to MTN’s national footprint, it’s all about how well they can package and market their services.”

The deal works both ways. MTN gets access to 9mobile’s underused spectrum in the 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, and 2100 MHz bands. These frequency bands are essential for boosting signal strength and expanding network reach, especially in busy cities and remote areas.

Although regulatory limits may apply, the agreement fits the NCC’s larger plan to encourage sharing of telecom resources. This helps cut costs, avoid network duplication, and improve service across the country.

If all goes well, this launch could serve as a model for how smaller telecom players can survive in a market dominated by MTN and Airtel. Most importantly, it brings hope for better connectivity to millions of Nigerians, especially those in underserved areas.
