In a dramatic shift, Nigerian lawyer Emeka Ugwuonye has officially stepped down from representing actress and entrepreneur May Edochie in her high-profile marital dispute with Nollywood actor Yul Edochie. Ugwuonye, through his firm Due Process Advocates (DPA), announced his withdrawal and cited intense harassment from May’s own fan base, known as “May Nation,” as the core reason.
According to Ugwuonye, the toxic atmosphere created by some of May’s supporters made it impossible for him and his team to work effectively. He revealed that his staff faced verbal abuse and online bullying that surpassed anything they encountered from Yul Edochie’s camp. Initially, he considered seeking May’s approval to step aside but held off, thinking it might appear too extreme.
Ugwuonye stressed that he has always stood against polygamy and made it clear that his commitment to May’s cause stemmed from a desire to protect her rights and dignity. He directly confronted Yul Edochie over his interviews and bride price claims, seeking justice for May in the public and legal space.
Despite his vocal support, Ugwuonye accused some individuals within May Nation of deliberately sabotaging the legal process. He also disclosed that Yul and Judy referred to themselves as “skit makers” in court documents, denying their marriage under oath an issue he personally uncovered.

Highlighting his firm’s uniqueness, Ugwuonye claimed that no top-tier law firm in Nigeria could match DPA’s grassroots approach to justice. He emphasized that his departure could make it harder for May to find someone with his depth of commitment and legal strategy.
