Nigerian lawyer Festus Ogun has publicly defended Wunmi, the widow of the late singer Mohbad, against what he calls deliberate and unfair accusations following her husband’s controversial death. Ogun criticized those targeting Wunmi, arguing that they are using her as a scapegoat instead of pursuing real justice.
Mohbad, a rising star in Nigeria’s music industry, died in September 2023 at the age of 27. His sudden and mysterious death sparked protests and widespread demands for answers. Ogun, who became the first legal professional to petition the Chief Coroner of Lagos about the case, actively participated in the Coroner Inquest. After attending only four sessions, he said he had already formed a strong idea of what led to the singer’s death.
Despite the ongoing investigation, many continue to point fingers at Wunmi. Ogun condemned these accusations, labeling them as targeted attacks rooted in cultural prejudice. He emphasized that in many African communities, people often blame widows for their husbands’ deaths. In extreme cases, families force women to undergo degrading rituals to prove their innocence.
Ogun believes Wunmi is facing the same cruel pattern. He called out this cultural behavior as barbaric and harmful, urging Nigerians to shift their focus to factual investigations rather than emotional or traditional reactions.
He insisted that authorities and the public must respect due process and protect grieving individuals from cultural victimization. By speaking out, Ogun not only supports Wunmi but also highlights the urgent need for reform in how Nigerian society treats widows in the wake of tragedy.
