A Coroner’s Court sitting at the Yaba Magistrate Court in Lagos has scheduled April 14, 2026, for a formal inquest into the death of Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s son, 21-month-old Nkanu Nnamdi Esege.
The child was the son of award-winning author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Dr. Ivara Esege. Magistrate Atinuke Adetunji announced the date during a preliminary session. She disclosed that the Chief Coroner of Lagos State received a request from the Attorney-General to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death, which occurred on January 7, 2026.
The toddler died after medical procedures at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos. He had earlier been referred from Atlantis Hospital for diagnostic tests. The tests were reportedly ahead of a planned medical evacuation to the United States.
Adichie and her husband have filed a legal notice alleging medical negligence. According to their counsel, the death was unnatural and happened during medical intervention.
Their lead lawyer, Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), outlined several allegations in court. These include wrongful prescription, improper administration of propofol, possible overdose, and lack of essential resuscitation equipment.
Adichie had earlier spoken publicly about the loss. She described it as “living your worst nightmare.” She also alleged that her son died due to unprofessional conduct by the hospital and the anaesthesiologist.
In response, Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital denied the claims. The hospital stated that its staff followed established clinical protocols and internationally accepted medical standards.
Magistrate Adetunji clarified that the inquest will determine the exact cause of death. She noted that an autopsy report is a key starting point in every coroner’s investigation.
All parties have been directed to submit witness statements before the April hearing.
