French automobile manufacturers have formed strategic partnerships with Nigerian conglomerates to revive local vehicle production in the country. The collaboration involves Dangote Group and Coscharis Group and aims to produce 44,000 vehicles annually.

The initiative seeks to reintroduce French automotive brands into Nigeria through modernized assembly lines and localized manufacturing agreements.

One partnership involves Peugeot and Dangote Peugeot Automobiles Nigeria (DPAN). The company plans to relaunch the assembly of several models. These include the Peugeot 301, 308, 3008, 5008, and 508.

Another partnership links Renault with the Coscharis Group. The companies plan to produce vehicles under the Logan brand specifically for the Nigerian market.

Marc Fonbaustier confirmed the development while discussing the production goals. He explained that the annual target of 44,000 vehicles reflects a major step toward rebuilding the French automotive presence in Nigeria.

“Ambitious but achievable.”

The ambassador also said French manufacturers are working closely with Nigerian partners to rebuild a market position they once held.

“Gradually restore their presence.”

French automotive brands previously had strong roots in Nigeria through Peugeot Automobile Nigeria. The company operated a major assembly plant in Kaduna for decades.

However, economic changes and the rise of cheaper imported vehicles later reduced local production. The situation changed after the Dangote Group acquired a controlling stake and created Dangote Peugeot Automobiles Nigeria.

Industry observers say the partnership could help boost local manufacturing. It may also provide alternatives to imported vehicles and encourage technology transfer.

Despite strong competition from Chinese and Indian automakers, French investors remain optimistic about Nigeria’s long-term market potential.

The 44,000-unit production goal reflects a broader plan to rebuild Nigeria’s automotive industry. Supporters of the initiative also expect the project to create new jobs and expand domestic manufacturing capacity.
