Nigerian transport companies are changing strategy. Many leading transport operators are now investing in local vehicle assembly. This shift comes as road passenger traffic continues to decline.

Top industry players include Chisco Transport, ABC Transport, GUO Transport, and God Is Good Motors (GIGM). These companies are building assembly plants to sustain growth and modernize Nigeria’s transport system.

The transition is led by Chidi Anyaegbu of Chisco Group. He recently launched an assembly plant in Surulere, Lagos. The facility produces Yutong luxury buses and Sinotruk trucks.

Chisco also introduced a “Drive-To-Own” franchise model. The company has deployed 80 buses and 40 trucks. These vehicles now serve key routes across Nigeria, including the Lagos-Accra corridor, strengthening the Nigerian transport network.

Other operators are focusing on niche segments. Frank Nneji leads Transit Support Services Ltd, which assembles Shacman trucks. Meanwhile, Godwin Ubaka Okeke has acquired ANAMMCO to produce durable pickup trucks.

At GIGM, CEO Chidi Ajaere is driving innovation. His company, Jet Systems, is producing eco-friendly minibuses powered by Compressed Natural Gas, marking a significant advancement in Nigerian transport sustainability.

Industry experts say local brands now compete with global manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz and Volvo. Local assembly has reduced vehicle costs and improved access to spare parts.

Large companies such as Dangote Group are already adopting these vehicles into their fleets.

This shift is also creating jobs. The “Drive-To-Own” model trains drivers, known as captains, and offers new employment opportunities.

Modern features are another advantage. Many vehicles now include entertainment screens, charging ports, and sleeper berths for long-distance drivers.
