Afrobeats singer Asake, born Ahmed Ololade, made a grand return to his alma mater, Obafemi Awolowo University, and the palace of the Ooni of Ife, celebrating his global success with the community that shaped his career.

Arriving on campus via helicopter at the Mainbowl, Asake was greeted by thousands of cheering students. Accompanied by his mother and fellow alumnus Yhemolee, he first visited the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simeon Bamire, at the Senate Building before proceeding to the university’s Amphitheatre.

“We are immensely proud of Asake,” Professor Bamire stated during the official reception. “He is a testament to the quality of graduates this institution produces. His success is OAU’s success.”

During the event, Asake, a graduate of the Department of Dramatic Arts, performed the traditional Yoruba dobale (prostration) to show respect to his former lecturers. He also joined departmental drummers on the djembe, engaging directly with students.

“I feel so honored to be back where it all started,” Asake told the crowd at the Amphitheatre. “OAU taught me how to be a performer before I became a star. To the students here, stay dedicated to your craft. The ‘Great Ife’ training is a solid foundation for any global stage.”

Following the campus visit, Asake paid a courtesy call to the Ooni of Ife, who praised him for representing Yoruba heritage internationally.

“His music acts as a bridge for the youth to connect with their heritage,” the Ooni remarked, noting that Asake’s humility in returning to his roots serves as a powerful cultural example.

The visit comes after Asake’s mother revealed on the Korty EO podcast that he chose OAU over an opportunity to study in the United Kingdom, a decision she credits for shaping his unique artistic path.
