Early Life

Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, known as Burna Boy, was born on July 2, 1991, in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. He began creating beats using FL Studio and later studied media in the UK. After returning to Nigeria, he interned at a radio station before launching his music career.

Career

Burna Boy gained recognition in 2012 with “Like to Party”, a breakout single from his debut album L.I.F.E. He followed up with On a Spaceship in 2015 and Outside in 2018, which included the hit “Ye.” In 2019, he dropped African Giant, earning a Grammy nomination and winning big at the BET and All Africa Music Awards.

In 2020, he released Twice as Tall, which won a Grammy for Best Global Music Album. By 2022, Love, Damini became the highest-charting Nigerian album on Billboard and broke streaming records globally.

Burna Boy holds the distinction of being the first African artist to perform at the UEFA Champions League Final Kick-Off Show in 2023. That same year, he headlined and sold out Citi Field in New York, a first for an African act. He won the inaugural Best Afrobeats award at the Billboard Music Awards and became the most streamed Sub-Saharan African artist on Spotify for two consecutive years.

He has received ten Grammy nominations, making him the most nominated Nigerian artist in Grammy history. In 2024, he performed “Sittin’ on Top of the World” at the Grammy Awards alongside Brandy and 21 Savage. Later that year, his hit “Higher” earned a Grammy nomination for Best African Music Performance.

Known for fusing Afrobeat, dancehall, reggae, and hip-hop, Burna Boy continues to break boundaries and bring African music to a global audience. With his relentless creativity, he has cemented his place as one of the most influential musicians of his generation.
