Early Life
J. Martins was born on September 29, 1977, in Onitsha, Anambra State, Nigeria, with family origins in Ohafia, Abia State. His choir master’s mother inspired his early passion for music. As a child, he traveled frequently with his mother, exposing him to diverse church choirs. During his formative years, he learned to play multiple instruments.
Martins completed his primary and secondary education in Enugu State, earning both his school leaving certificate and West African Senior School certificate. He attended the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) in Enugu, where he earned a National Diploma in Mass Communication. He later graduated from Enugu State University of Science and Technology with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
Career
J. Martins began his music career in his church choir, mastering keyboard, guitar, and saxophone, among other instruments. He released his debut studio album, Get Serious, in 2008. While in school, he ran a production company called Glorious Praise, focusing mainly on gospel music. His early professional breakthrough came when he signed on as a producer for Patty Obasi, a renowned gospel artist.
Though he worked with artists like Waje and Nigga Raw as a producer, his big break arrived through P-Square’s hit songs “Busy Body” and its remix. After establishing himself as a producer, Martins transitioned to pursue his own music career.
He released his second and third albums, Elevated and Selah, in 2009. J. Martins collaborated with Nigerian stars including Phyno, YCEE, Olamide, Flavour, Timaya, and featured on P-Square’s “E No Easy.”
On January 2, 2011, J. Martins married Nnazi, a socialite from Abuja and a native of Abia State. They held their traditional wedding in his hometown of Ohafia, Abia State, attended by friends and fellow musicians.
J. Martins’ journey from church choirs to the mainstream music scene showcases his talent and versatility. His contributions as both a producer and artist have cemented his place in Nigerian music history.
