Early Life

Mayorkun, born Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel on March 23, 1994, in Lagos, Nigeria, is the first of three children in a Christian family. He launched his career in music after deciding to leave his bank job, seeking a more fulfilling path.

Music Career

Mayorkun made a bold move to pursue music full-time after his cover of Davido’s “The Money” caught the attention of the artist on Twitter in February 2016.

Davido, impressed by his talent, followed him on social media and inquired if he could do more than just play the keyboard. After sending Davido some of his recorded tracks, Mayorkun received a call from the superstar the same day he quit his job. This moment led to him signing with Davido Music Worldwide (DMW).

In 2016, Mayorkun dropped his debut single, “Eleko,” which quickly became a hit. The song debuted at number 9 on the Nigeria Playdata charts and reached number 5 within weeks.

The music video hit one million views in just 10 days. Throughout his career, Mayorkun released other successful singles like “Yawa,” “Sade,” “Che Che,” and “Mama.”

In October 2018, he teased his debut album The Mayor of Lagos with singles like “Posh” and “Fantasy,” featuring Olu Maintain. The album, released on November 16, 2018, climbed to number 15 on the Billboard World Albums chart.

Mayorkun went on a nationwide tour in 2017, performing in over 35 schools, and capped the year with his first headline concert in Lagos, The Mayor of Lagos.

He continued the concert series in 2018 with shows in Ibadan, Abuja, and Lagos. The UK also saw him perform alongside Dremo during their 2018 tour, and he even took the stage with Davido at the Wireless Festival.

In 2021, after his second studio album Back in Office was released, Mayorkun revealed his departure from DMW. The album, launched on October 29, 2021, was released under Sony Music’s West Africa division.
