Nigerian content creator Carter Efe has sparked widespread backlash after making an extreme vow about Afrobeats star Davido’s chances at the 68th Grammy Awards.
In a viral video shared on Friday, January 30, 2026, Carter Efe staked his father’s life on the certainty of Davido winning a Grammy trophy at the upcoming ceremony.
He said:
“I can bet my papa. I will bet everything I have in this life — if Davido doesn’t win a Grammy award, let my father kpai.”
The statement surfaced as the countdown began for the awards ceremony scheduled for Sunday, February 1, 2026, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
Davido is currently nominated in the Best African Music Performance category for his hit collaboration With You featuring Omah Lay. He faces strong competition from Burna Boy (Love), Tyla (PUSH 2 START), Ayra Starr (Gimme Dat), and Eddy Kenzo & Mehran Matin (Hope & Love).
Ahead of the ceremony, Davido delivered a high-profile performance at the Grammy Museum’s Clive Davis Theater. Backed by a live band, he performed a medley of hits, including the nominated track With You.
During a pre-show discussion, the singer reflected on his career and latest album 5IVE, stating:
“My work in the industry is not done.”
The Recording Academy has emphasized the importance of the African music category, describing it as a major platform for celebrating the continent’s diverse musical output.
Despite the controversy surrounding Carter Efe’s statement, attention remains on the February 1 broadcast, where Trevor Noah will host the ceremony for a sixth consecutive year.
