Veteran Nollywood actor Kehinde Olusegun Akinremi, widely known as Chief Kanran, faced a critical health crisis caused by appendicitis shortly before his death. U.S.-based lawyer and astronaut Owolabi Salis revealed that Kanran reached out to him in July seeking urgent financial help for surgery.

Responding immediately, Salis transferred the needed amount to cover the hospital bill. Kanran expressed heartfelt gratitude through voice notes sent on July 28 and August 1. Sadly, just days later, news of his death reached Salis, who described the moment as heartbreaking.

Chief Kanran left a lasting impact on the Nigerian film and theatre industry. His portrayal of the Alaafin Kanran of Oyo Empire became iconic and earned him his stage name. His performances displayed remarkable versatility, excelling in roles from monarchs to villains with equal brilliance.

Beyond the screen, Kanran endured immense personal hardship. He lost two wives, his home, cars, and studio to fire, and faced periods of homelessness. Despite his contributions to Nigeria’s cultural heritage, he received little support during these difficult times.

Salis emphasized the need for society to do more for creatives like Kanran. He urged industry leaders, government bodies, and corporate entities to honour his legacy and ensure future support systems for aging entertainers.

Chief Kanran’s death reflects a larger issue in the Nigerian entertainment industry: the neglect of veteran actors. His legacy deserves more than remembrance it demands action. Supporting our cultural icons should not be a choice but a responsibility we all share.
