Nigerian singer Cynthia Morgan has urged citizens to ask President Bola Tinubu’s administration to take immediate steps to alleviate the economic hardships facing the country.
The singer, who initially supported the president’s decision to remove the fuel subsidy, now regrets her stance as the effects of the policy have become unbearable for many Nigerians.
In a recent video posted on TikTok, Morgan expressed her frustration, revealing that she is struggling with the consequences of the subsidy removal.
She acknowledged the need for action, stating that the only way forward may be for Nigerians to plead with the government for change.
Morgan pointed out that spending billions on the subsidy, when the country’s total annual revenue is much lower, does not make sense in the long run.
“I was one of those who applauded Tinubu for removing the subsidy, but now I don’t think we are ready for it,” Morgan shared.
She explained that the country lacks the structures needed to support such a drastic change and that the rising cost of living is directly linked to the fuel price hike.
Morgan also mentioned that inflation and an unstable exchange rate are major concerns, contributing to Nigeria’s current economic struggles.
She suggested that instead of protests, Nigerians might consider starting a “begging challenge” to appeal to the government to reconsider the full removal of the subsidy.
The singer believes that if at least 50% of the subsidy could be reinstated, it would provide some relief to struggling citizens.
Despite recognizing the need for long-term change and investment in other sectors, Cynthia Morgan emphasized that the current situation is pushing many people to the brink, with rising hunger and crime rates.
