Early life

Olumide Ogunade, popularly known as ID Cabasa, is a veteran Nigerian music producer and singer. He was born on July 29, 1975, in Lagos, Nigeria, as the third of four children. His musical journey began during his teenage years while attending St. Finbarr’s College in Akoka. Fascinated by sound and rhythm, he spent time at Afrodicia Record Studio, previously known as Peca, which produced legends like Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey, and Sir Shina Peters. Living close to the studio allowed him to observe the music-making process up close, igniting his passion for production.

ID Cabasa pursued a degree in Economics at Lagos State University and later earned a Master’s in Management Economics from the University of Lagos. Though he briefly worked in the banking sector, he shifted fully into music production in 2003 after completing his studies.

Career

In 2002, ID Cabasa founded Coded Tunes, a record label that became a launchpad for many Nigerian stars. Early on, he teamed up with 2Phat, Lord of Ajasa, and MC Spakoto to form The Smiling Head Soldier clique. Their studio attracted other emerging talents, leading to the formation of the Yabtown Squad, which included artists like Reminisce. Many of these musicians were younger schoolmates of Cabasa.

As their influence grew, they decided to merge their collective efforts into a single powerful movement. Drawing inspiration from the studio that united them, they officially branded the label as Coded Tunes. Under his leadership, the label signed and developed some of Nigeria’s most notable artists, including 9ice, Olamide, Banky W, Reminisce, Seriki, 2Shotz, Ajayi Brovas, 2Phat, and Lord of Ajasa.

ID Cabasa’s influence on the Nigerian music industry remains significant, with his contributions helping shape the sound of modern Afrobeats and hip-hop in Nigeria.
