Early Life
Richard Olowaranti Mbu Isong, professionally known as P2J, was born on July 11, 1987. He is a Nigerian-British music producer based in London, England. Over the years, he has built an impressive portfolio, producing for global artists such as Beyoncé, Wizkid, Stormzy, FKA Twigs, Burna Boy, Tems, and Doja Cat.
Career And Achievements
P2J began shaping his music journey at age 14 when a teacher encouraged him to explore music courses. He officially kicked off his career in 2007 under the alias P2J Project, debuting with the grime track Hands in the Air on Channel U. He initially went by the name Pro2Jay, producing for artists like Tiwa Savage, Krept and Konan, and Lily Allen.
In 2017, he produced Covered in You for Chris Brown’s Heartbreak on a Full Moon album. By 2019, he became a leading figure in the afrobeats scene, collaborating with Burna Boy, Wizkid, GoldLink, WSTRN, Doja Cat, and Davido. His standout moment that year came with his work on Beyoncé’s The Lion King: The Gift, where he produced six tracks, earning a Grammy nomination.
P2J won his first Grammy in 2020 for Burna Boy’s Twice as Tall, which took home Best Global Music Album. P2J also led production on Wizkid’s Made in Lagos, which included Essence—the first Nigerian song to enter the Billboard Hot 100 and Global 200. In 2022, he continued expanding his discography with work for FKA Twigs, Young T & Bugsey, and Ella Mai.
He also emphasized his mission to blend African sounds with global genres—infusing afrobeats with R&B, house, pop, and rap. He highlighted his synergy with Wizkid, particularly in their shared vision for Made in Lagos, known for its distinct bass lines and fusion of styles.
