Nigerian rapper and singer, Superboy Cheque, has revealed that a painful battle with acne almost forced him to quit music.
In a recent interview with Yanga FM Lagos, the “Zoom” crooner spoke about how the skin condition affected his confidence at a crucial point in his career. According to Cheque, his struggle with acne damaged his self-esteem and changed how he saw himself in public.
“I struggled with acne years back. It was terrible. My desperation to cure it led me to buy a makeup that almost disfigured my face. It was embarrassing. I almost quit music. I couldn’t even approach women then.”
Superboy Cheque explained that things became worse after his breakthrough song “Zoom.” As his fame grew, so did his anxiety about appearing on camera. He said the transition from being underground to becoming a signed artist brought pressure he was not prepared for.
“After my breakthrough song ‘Zoom’ and I got signed by a record label, it dawned on me that I would be attending interviews and would be in front of cameras. I am a perfectionist. So, I went to get a makeup from a store to clear it, but instead it almost disfigured my face.”
The attempt to fix the issue backfired badly.
“I woke up one morning and realised that my whole face has been damaged.”
Despite the setback, Cheque did not give up. Instead, he turned his pain into music. He revealed that the experience inspired his collaboration “History” with Fireboy DML.
Today, Cheque says the experience reshaped his confidence and perspective. His story highlights the hidden struggles many artists face behind the spotlight and how personal battles can fuel powerful creativity.
