Career
Nkem Owoh, a celebrated Nigerian actor, comedian, and singer, discovered his passion for the performing arts early in life. Although he earned a degree in engineering, his love for acting, writing, and music guided his career path. After completing his national youth service, he joined WACO Engineering but was laid off within a year—an event that led him to explore radio and television.
He began his entertainment journey in 1979 as a scriptwriter at the Nigerian Television Authority, contributing to popular shows like The New Masquerade and Basi and Company. A chance to fill in for an absent actor launched his acting career. He transitioned into film after subtitling Living in Bondage, later starring in Circle of Doom and Taboo, where he also contributed as a writer.
In 1995, he created Ikuku, portraying the beloved character Osuofia. He reprised the role in Osuofia in London and its sequel, earning international fame. Owoh also gained attention for his controversial song “I Go Chop Your Dollar,” leading to temporary legal issues abroad.
Married since 1998, Owoh has two daughters and tragically lost one in 2023. His accolades include multiple Africa Movie Academy Awards and a long-term endorsement deal with MTN.
