At the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) Globe Awards last Saturday, comedian Bovi Ugbomah reminded everyone why he’s the master of mixing humor with bold commentary.
Taking aim at industry heavyweight Innocent Idibia, aka Tubaba, Bovi joked that the singer achieved something unprecedented: skipping the usual waiting period between divorce and remarriage.
The comic referenced Tubaba’s recent split from long-time wife Annie Macaulay and his quick marriage to Edo State lawmaker Natasha Osawaru, all within a matter of months. “Happiness is what matters,” Bovi quipped, chipping in that the same goes for women.
This isn’t the first time Bovi has teased Tubaba. Back in 2015, during the singer’s 40th birthday, Bovi and friends like the late Sound Sultan and MI Abaga roasted him as well.
Bovi’s joke also highlights a trend among Nigerian celebrities. In 2022, comedian Basketmouth publicly announced his separation from his wife Elsie, calling the decision difficult but necessary. That same year, Buchi and his wife parted ways, sparking a custody battle. And in 2024, AY revealed his split from Mabel after 20 years of marriage, reflecting on the personal toll of ending a long-term relationship.
