Damon Dash is once again making headlines, but not for his creative work. A federal judge has now ordered him to sell off key assets tied to his film and streaming ventures. This latest legal blow follows years of court battles and unpaid debts, particularly a dispute with author and filmmaker Edwyna Brooks.

The conflict began in 2019 when Brooks sued Damon Dash. She accused him of distributing a film based on her Mafietta book series without her approval. She won a $78,289 judgment in 2020. However, Dash never paid. Instead, he filed a countersuit, which he later lost. Since then, Brooks claims Dash has avoided paying what he owes. She also says he has hidden earnings using shell companies such as The Dash Group and Poppington LLC. With interest and legal fees added, she says the total now nears $100,000.

In 2023, Dash was forced to sell his Roc-A-Fella Records shares in an effort to repay some of the debt. That sale did not cover the full amount. Brooks went back to court and asked for more of Dash’s assets to be liquidated.

The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York granted her request. A receiver has now been appointed to oversee the sale of assets owned by The Dash Group. The court found the company is entirely controlled by Dash’s wife, Raquel Horn. As a result, Horn must sell her ownership in the business.

Assets now up for sale include the America Nu streaming platform, the CEOByDash website, and even the children’s book Dusko Goes To Space. These were all part of Dash’s efforts to build his media empire.

This new order is a major blow to Dash. What once looked like promising business ventures are now being dismantled to cover mounting legal debts.
