The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has honored actress Toyin Abraham with the Box Office Champion Award.
The recognition follows the success of her film Over Sabi Auntie. The movie recently crossed the ₦1 billion mark at the Nigerian box office. This achievement makes Abraham the first debut director in Nollywood history to reach this milestone.
The award ceremony took place on Thursday. NFVCB Executive Director Shuaib Husseini described the achievement as a major moment for the industry.
“It is my honour to welcome you as we celebrate excellence and remarkable achievements within Nigeria’s film industry.”
“This accomplishment is not only a personal triumph but a testament to the industry’s growing strength. You have entertained millions and encouraged others to dream bigger.”
In her speech, Abraham explained why she chose to direct the film herself.
“I told my manager that I wanted to direct this movie by myself, alone.”
She also shared how she sought guidance from Bolanle Austin-Peters before starting the project.
“I went to my industry godmother… and told her I wanted to shoot a movie.”
Toyin Abraham added that she made the decision after feeling limited creatively.
“I was frustrated with taking instructions from others.”
The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) also recognized the milestone. Representing the president, Sanusi Yakubu, Don Pedro highlighted its impact.
“We gather not merely to present an award but to mark a defining moment.”
“Her film’s performance shows Nigerian stories are gaining global attention.”
The event also attracted notable figures, including Olori Temitope Ogunwusi.
Abraham ended her speech by thanking her husband, her team, and the NFVCB for supporting her vision.
