Veteran Nollywood actress Ngozi Nwosu has opened up about one of the most painful experiences of her life — surviving domestic violence during her marriage. In a recent appearance on the podcast Real Life Matters With Aunty Ayo, the seasoned actress, known for her remarkable roles in classic Nigerian TV shows and films, shared her heartbreaking story with honesty and strength.

Ngozi revealed that she suffered physical abuse from her former husband, even while she was pregnant. For years, she chose to keep silent, refusing to make her personal pain a public spectacle. “I didn’t want to wash my dirty linen in public,” she admitted, recalling how she smiled through the pain to protect her dignity and privacy.

One of the most shocking moments she revealed was that she actually walked out of her own wedding ceremony because the abuse had already started. But she returned after her elder sister pleaded with her, saying people would talk if she left. Looking back, Ngozi Nwosu said that moment taught her one of life’s hardest truths. “Once beaten will always be beaten. If you take it once, you must be ready to take it for the rest of your life,” she said.

The actress also warned women not to stay in abusive relationships, using the tragic story of gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu as an example of what could happen when silence becomes fatal. She emphasized that marriage should never be treated as a do-or-die affair, noting that one’s safety and peace must always come first.

Reflecting on today’s social media culture, Ngozi cautioned against trivializing domestic abuse online, saying, “When you see real beating, you’ll forget about social media. You’ll start struggling for your life.”
