Early Life

Alexander Osamudiame Uwaifo, known professionally as Andre Vibez, was born on September 25, 1988, in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. He is the son of the late Sir Victor Uwaifo, the legendary Nigerian highlife musician and the first African to win a gold disc. Andre completed his secondary education at Kings College, Lagos, before earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine and Applied Arts from the University of Benin.

Musical Beginnings

Andre grew up immersed in music, joining his father’s band, Titibiti, as a keyboardist while still a teenager in 2005. He first tried his hand as a rapper before his father encouraged him toward music production. His production career formally began in 2012, when he worked on Le’roy’s single “Selensele.” Over the following years he built a reputation in Benin City for nurturing raw talent, which is where he first crossed paths with a young Rema, then part of a duo called RNA.

Rise to Prominence

Andre Vibez’s profile grew steadily through the late 2010s, and by 2021 he was producing records such as “Feeling” for Ladipoe and Bnxn. That same year, his path crossed again with Rema, and the pair began working on a record that would become “Calm Down.” Released in 2022 on Rema’s debut album Rave & Roses, the song was co-produced with fellow Nigerian producer London (Michael Hunter). “Calm Down” went on to become the biggest Afrobeats song in history, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100 after its 2023 remix with Selena Gomez and surpassing one billion Spotify streams, a first for an African artist-led track.

Mavin Records and Beyond

In September 2022, Andre Vibez was signed to Mavin Records, the label founded by Don Jazzy, as one of a new wave of in-house producers. He went on to produce the label’s all-star single “Won Da Mo,” featuring Rema, Ayra Starr, Magixx, Ladipoe, Crayon, Johnny Drille, Boy Spyce, Bayanni, and Don Jazzy. He also produced Ayra Starr’s “Rush” from her album 19 & Dangerous, and Crayon’s “Modupe.” Andre describes his signature production style as “Afro-rave,” a sound he built by blending hip-hop, African rhythms, lo-fi textures, and alternative influences.

Recognition

For his work on “Calm Down,” Andre Vibez and London were honored at the 2024 ASCAP London Music Awards, winning both Song of the Year and Top Streaming Song. He has also received nominations at the Headies, AFRIMMA, and The Beatz Awards. Today, Andre Vibez is regarded as one of the producers driving Afrobeats’ global crossover, carrying forward his father’s musical legacy in a new era of Nigerian sound.
