Fiokee, born Ifiok Effanga, is a Nigerian guitarist, producer, and songwriter widely regarded as one of the most in-demand session musicians in Afrobeats, having contributed guitar work to an estimated three-quarters of the genre’s biggest hits over the past decade.
Born on January 10, 1982, in Akwa Ibom State, Fiokee is the fourth of six children. He discovered music in his church choir, learning solfege notation before receiving early guitar lessons from a taxi driver. He went on to study mechanical engineering at the Petroleum Training Institute in Effurun, Delta State, continuing to develop his playing in church throughout his studies.
Fiokee’s breakthrough came in 2008 when he won the Star Quest reality television competition as part of a group called Diamonds, a victory that opened the door to the Nigerian music industry. He signed with Kennis Music for a year before joining D’Banj’s band in 2010, playing guitar on the hit ‘Scape Goat’ and serving as his lead guitarist for four years.
Over more than two decades, Fiokee has become known for trebly, highlife-infused guitar solos and outros that have appeared on records by Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade, Patoranking, Reekado Banks, Adekunle Gold, Flavour, Simi, and Kiss Daniel. In 2016, he established his own label, Fiokee Records, and in 2022 released his debut album, MAN, the first compilation project from an African guitarist featuring a range of collaborating artists.
Fiokee continues to release new music, including his 2026 single ‘Ukebe,’ extending a career defined by a rare instrumental voice within a genre more typically driven by vocal hooks and rhythm-first production.
