Afrobeats musician Seun Kuti has addressed the root of Nigeria’s tarnished international image, stating that the blame lies not with internet fraudsters, commonly referred to as Yahoo boys, but with the country’s political elite.
During a candid conversation on the Honest Bunch podcast, Kuti challenged the widespread belief that Nigeria’s global reputation suffers because of its most notorious individuals. Instead, he asserted that the world forms opinions about countries based on the actions of their most prominent figures namely, politicians.
Kuti dismissed the idea that fraudsters define the nation’s character. “No country is judged by its worst people,” he said. “People judge countries by their best and most visible citizens. Our politicians represent us internationally, and their behavior shapes global perception.”
He urged Nigerians to stop accepting the false narrative that Yahoo boys are the reason for the country’s disrespect abroad. According to him, the persistent image issues Nigeria faces stem from the corruption, irresponsibility, and poor conduct of its leaders on the world stage.
Seun Kuti’s remarks serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of leadership in shaping national identity.
He calls for a shift in focus from blaming marginalized groups to holding political leaders accountable for the country’s global standing.
