Timaya isn’t shy about speaking his mind—and this time, he’s talking about how much the music industry has evolved. On a recent episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, the dancehall star reflected on how easy it is for today’s new artists to rise to fame compared to when he was just starting out.
He shared that technology and social media have made the process much faster and more accessible. Unlike the early 2000s, when artists had to depend on radio stations or music labels, things are now different. According to him, all it takes is a hit song and a phone with internet access. “Making music is easier for the new crop of musicians than in my time. Ahn ahn, before how do you want to blow? It’s only one person that has all the control,” he said.

Timaya recalled the stress of clearing songs and working with big catalog companies. “This ‘Odeshi’ song that I did with Flavour, we got to realised that it was Premier Music that has the catalogue… We paid again.” Now, he explained, even someone recording from home can make a breakthrough. “Your father or your mother can just buy you studio equipments… One TikTok song and you are made. All you need is data.”
Although he finds the current music climate exciting, he admitted it hasn’t been easy for him to adjust. “It’s stressful posting. Sometimes, I think I don’t have to. But it’s the business, I got to.”
Even though times have changed, Timaya’s honesty shows just how far the industry has come—and how much artists have to grow with it.
