Early Life

Pete Edochie was born in Zaria, Kaduna State. He began his education at St. Patrick’s and St. James Primary Schools in Zaria, followed by secondary education at St. John’s College. He later studied at the School of Journalism and Television in England, where he honed his communication and media skills.

Career

Pete Edochie launched his professional journey in radio broadcasting in 1967 at the age of 20. He started as a junior programs assistant and quickly advanced to become Director of Programs. At various points, he also served as Deputy Managing Director and acting Managing Director of Anambra Broadcasting Service. However, when political interference disrupted the station’s operations, he chose to exit the organization. He had been in line to succeed the Managing Director but opted to transition fully into acting.

Even before leaving broadcasting, Edochie had already portrayed the iconic character Okonkwo in Things Fall Apart, a role that earned him international recognition. The BBC traveled to Nigeria to interview him, acknowledging the impact of his performance.

In 2005, the Actors Guild of Nigeria issued a one-year filming ban on Edochie and several top actors due to concerns over the rising fees they commanded as leading figures in Nollywood. Despite this, his reputation remained untarnished, and his influence in the industry continued to grow.

Pete Edochie is married to Josephine Edochie. Together, they have six children. In 2009, kidnappers briefly abducted him, but he was released unharmed.
