Early Life

Tonto Charity Dikeh was born on 9 June 1985 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria, into a family of seven, the third of five children. She hails from Obio-Akpor Local Government Area and belongs to the Ikwerre ethnic group. Tonto lost her mother when she was just three years old and was subsequently raised by her stepmother alongside her siblings. She completed her primary and secondary education in Port Harcourt before proceeding to Rivers State University (formerly Rivers State University of Science and Technology), where she earned a degree in Petrochemical Engineering.

Career

Tonto Dikeh first gained public attention as first runner-up on the reality show ‘The Next Movie Star,’ which launched her into Nollywood. She made her acting debut in ‘Holy Cross’ and went on to become one of the most recognisable and talked-about actresses in the Nigerian film industry, appearing in more than 80 films including ‘Missing Rib,’ ‘Games Fools Play,’ ‘A Night with the King,’ ‘Zara’ and the controversial ‘Dirty Secret,’ which drew significant attention for its adult themes.

Beyond acting, Tonto built a parallel career in music between 2011 and 2017, releasing singles including ‘Hi’ and ‘Itz Ova’ featuring Snypa. She signed to D’banj’s label, DB Records, in 2014, before leaving in 2015 to pursue independent projects, releasing further music under her own Poko Entertainment.

Tonto has also built a significant profile as a brand ambassador, representing companies including Numatville, Pels International, Sapphire Scents, Zikel Cosmetics and Amstel Malta, and partnering with NAPTIP as a voice against human trafficking.

Philanthropy and Politics

On 27 August 2000, Tonto Dikeh founded the Tonto Dikeh Foundation, a non-governmental organisation focused on improving the standard of living of displaced and underprivileged women, girls, youth and children across Africa, regardless of political, religious or cultural background. The foundation runs scholarship and medical care programmes and has supported thousands of beneficiaries, alongside advocacy work on gender-based violence and child rights.

In June 2022, Tonto Dikeh entered politics, announced as the deputy governorship candidate for the African Democratic Congress in the 2023 Rivers State gubernatorial election, expanding her public profile from entertainment into civic life.

Personal Life

Tonto Dikeh married Oladunni Churchill in August 2015; the marriage produced a son, Andre Omodayo Churchill, before the couple divorced in 2017. Her personal life has frequently drawn significant media attention, including a widely publicised legal dispute with her former fiance, Prince Kpokpogri.

From her early days in Nollywood to her ventures in music, philanthropy and politics, Tonto Dikeh’s career reflects a determination to remain relevant across multiple platforms, making her one of the most recognisable and searched-for names in Nigerian entertainment.
