Early Life
El Mafrex, born Mfreke Obong Ibanga on May 14, 1984, is a Nigerian-born urban gospel singer-songwriter. He hails from Akwa Ibom State and attended the Nigerian Military School in Zaria, Kaduna State.
He later studied physics, majoring in electronics, at the University of Uyo, graduating in 2006. In pursuit of higher education, he earned a master’s degree in Information Systems Development from Edinburgh Napier University in 2010.
Career
El Mafrex is based in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he built a successful music career rooted in gospel and urban contemporary sound. He gained significant attention with tracks that merge African rhythms and western gospel influences, creating a unique and dynamic style.
His hit single “Jehovah,” featuring the Christian rock band Royal Foundlings, amassed over 500,000 views on YouTube within five months of release. Another hit, “That Man from Galilee,” debuted at No. 49 on the UK iTunes Gospel Chart and recorded over a million views on YouTube in its first six months.
He made history in 2012 by becoming the first black man to win Artiste of the Year and Urban Recording of the Year at the Scottish New Music Awards. He was also nominated for Best Gospel Act at the MOBO Awards in both 2012 and 2013. Additionally, he was a nominee for Season 8 of The Future Awards Africa in 2013, recognizing his impact on youth and innovation in gospel music.
El Mafrex continues to inspire with a message-driven music style that transcends continents. His blend of culture, faith, and talent has also made him a beacon in the urban gospel music scene.
