Early Life
Born Tariq Oluokun on May 1, 2001, TAR1Q grew up in Benin City, Nigeria. Frequent relocations during his childhood shaped his perspective and gave him a deep emotional well to draw from. He turned to music as a form of refuge and self-expression, especially during challenging times.
By the age of 12, he had discovered a deep love for sound and songwriting. While studying geology at Lagos State University, he continued developing his artistic identity. His early experiences became the foundation for the emotional depth that now defines his music.
Career
TAR1Q began his music journey in 2018, experimenting with trap rap before evolving into a versatile artist with a unique voice. As he refined his sound, he created what he calls “Afro-rhythm” a genre-bending blend of Afrobeat, R&B, and soul that showcases his signature smooth and velvety tone. His music combines emotional vulnerability with catchy melodies and rich storytelling.
In 2021, TAR1Q caught the attention of Nutrybe Records, an arm of Chocolate City Music, where he developed his craft before officially joining the main label in 2023. His debut EP, Son of the Moon, released in 2022, gave listeners a deeper look into his introspective world. Songs like “PrEttY Like,” “iN My FeeLinGS,” “Signal,” and “Bad Intentions” cemented his reputation as a voice for those who feel deeply but speak softly.
As an introvert, TAR1Q channels his inner world through music, creating songs that speak to emotion, vulnerability, and identity.
TAR1Q stands as a rising voice in Nigerian music, blending genres with honesty and soul. His journey proves that quiet voices can echo the loudest when paired with authenticity and talent.
