Early life

Joeboy kicked off his music career in 2017 with a viral cover of Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You.” This cover marked a pivotal shift from rapping to singing, a change his friend encouraged.

The video quickly grabbed the attention of Nigerian artist and entrepreneur Mr Eazi, who discovered Joeboy on Instagram and invited him to join the emPawa Africa initiative. This program, designed to support emerging African talent, gave Joeboy the resources to grow his career.

Career

On October 26, 2018, Joeboy dropped “Fààjí,” a track supported by the grant he received from emPawa100, which he used to fund the music video. Early in 2019, Joeboy recorded the smash hit “Baby” after receiving a beat from Dëra the Boy, sent to him by producer BeatsbyKO.

He wrote and recorded the song in just 45 minutes, trying out different choruses before landing on the final hook. When Mr Eazi heard the track, he shared it on social media, sparking excitement ahead of its March 1, 2019, release. With support from emPawa Africa, Joeboy promoted “Baby” with a cost-effective visualizer that played a key role in its viral success, racking up over 20 million streams across YouTube and Spotify that year.

Joeboy followed up with the Killertunes-produced “Beginning” on August 15, 2019. The track’s visualizer music video garnered 23 million views, telling the story of Joeboy developing feelings for a friend he initially rejected.

That same year, Joeboy released his debut EP Love & Light, which included singles like “Baby,” “Beginning,” and collaborations with Mayorkun on “Don’t Call Me” and “All for You.”

In 2019, Joeboy won Best Artiste in African Pop at the All Africa Music Awards and Best Pop at the 2020 Soundcity MVP Awards Festival.

Awards

He also received multiple nominations at the City People Entertainment Awards and The Headies. On April 10, 2020, Joeboy dropped “Call,” a catchy love song produced by Dera, which became the lead single from his debut album. The video, directed by TG Omori, featured a futuristic, dystopian theme.

In January 2021, Joeboy announced his debut album Somewhere Between Beauty & Magic, which released in February 2021, achieving moderate commercial success.

On May 19, 2023, he released his sophomore album Body & Soul, featuring singles like “Sip (Alcohol),” “Contour,” “Body & Soul,” and “Duffel Bag.” On November 3, 2023, Joeboy dropped the highly anticipated single “Only God Save Me” from the album.

Joeboy also released the Body Soul and Spirit EP, featuring the earlier single “Only God Can Save Me.” In February 2024, Joeboy launched his own record label, Young Legend. He followed this with the February 16 release of the hit single “Osadebe,” which gained nationwide recognition.
