Nigerian entertainment lawyer Oluyemisi Falaye has revealed why Afrobeats star Asake parted ways with Olamide’s YBNL record label. According to her, Asake felt cheated after signing a contract he didn’t fully understand despite her clear warning.

Falaye explained that when Olamide offered Asake the deal, the singer felt overwhelmed and excited. He refused to take proper legal advice before signing. Although Olamide advised him to consult a lawyer, he dismissed caution and rushed to sign the deal out of eagerness.
“I remember when Olamide offered to sign him. Asake was so excited, he said, ‘YBNL wants me? I’m not getting a lawyer; I’ll sign it now.’ He eventually brought it to me, and I told him, ‘If you sign this, you’ll assign your rights in perpetuity.’ But he didn’t listen,” Falaye recalled.
She revealed that Asake insulted her when she warned him about the contract’s long-term consequences. He accused her of trying to sabotage his big break. Despite the red flags, he signed the contract on the spot.
Falaye made it clear that Olamide acted in good faith and even encouraged Asake to take the contract to a legal expert. The fallout, she stressed, occurred because he ignored legal advice and failed to understand the agreement’s implications.
“If the contract worked in his favor, he would’ve renewed or renegotiated it. But he felt cheated because he didn’t understand what he signed,” she said.
Asake indirectly confirmed his split from YBNL in February when he launched his independent label, Giran Republic.
