Ronami Ogulu, sister to Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy, has opened up about her dramatic career shift from corporate finance to the heart of the global music industry. Originally trained as an investment banker, Ronami once envisioned a future as the President of the World Bank.

“I was trained in finance, investment banking specifically,” she revealed during the Martell Afrobeats Conversation Series. “My dream was to lead the World Bank, and I was very serious about it.”
She attributes much of her work ethic and vision to her upbringing. Her mother, Bose Ogulu — also Burna Boy’s longtime manager is a linguist fluent in six languages and a pivotal force behind Burna Boy’s rise. Watching her mother balance discipline with creativity deeply influenced Ronami.
Her foray into music began during her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year while working in corporate banking. What was supposed to be a three-month break to support her mother turned into a full-time career. “At first, she’d send me one email a day, then it became three. Then she said, ‘We’re going on tour,’” Ronami recalled. “I asked, ‘With who?’ She said, ‘With Burna.’ That tour changed everything.”
Following the tour, she made the bold decision not to return to banking. Instead, she stepped fully into the music business and now serves as Burna Boy’s Chief Operating Officer.
Ronami Ogulu’s journey is a powerful reminder that career paths are not always linear. Her transition from finance to Afrobeats highlights how passion, opportunity, and family can align to create unexpected success.
