Fireboy DML, the Nigerian Afrobeats star, has opened up about his struggles before fame. In a recent interview on the 90s Baby Show in London, he shared the tough times he faced. The singer, whose real name is Adedamola Adefolahan, revealed that he was close to selling rechargeable lamps under Ajah Bridge in Lagos before his breakthrough in music.
During the interview, Fireboy recalled how he considered selling rechargeable lamps as a way to make ends meet. “Thank God for that [Olamide signing me]. I was considering selling rechargeable lamps. I met one guy under Ajah Bridge; he was telling me about the business, and I told him I was interested,” Fireboy said.

He explained that, at the time, selling lamps seemed like a more respectable job than some of the menial tasks he was doing. “To me, at the time, it was more dignified. At least, people will say you sell lamps. But selling pepper soup is crazy, bro. My parents didn’t know I was doing menial jobs. It was crazy but now, we thank God,” Fireboy added.
The turning point came in 2018 when Fireboy was signed to YBNL Nation, the label founded by rapper Olamide. His career quickly took off with the release of his hit track “Jealous,” featured on the YBNL Mafia Family album.
In 2019, Fireboy released his debut album, Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps. The album earned him widespread recognition and cemented his place in the Nigerian music industry. Today, Fireboy DML’s journey serves as an inspiring story for anyone facing adversity.
