There has been confusion lately about Nigeria’s visa policy for American citizens, but everything is still running smoothly. Despite rumours online, Nigerian embassies and consulates in the United States are still giving five-year multiple-entry visas to Americans visiting for business, tourism, or personal reasons.
The News Agency of Nigeria checked with the Nigerian Embassy in Washington D.C. and the consulates in New York and Atlanta. They found that there has been no interruption in giving these long-term visas. Some American travellers and business people even confirmed they got their five-year visas without stress.
“America’s citizens are still getting their two, three, and five-year multiple-entry visas,” said Ambassador Samson Itegboje, Nigeria’s Acting Ambassador to the United States. He explained that Nigeria has not reduced its visas to only three-month single-entry as some reports claimed. In his words, “As of July 11, the Nigerian Embassy in Washington was still giving two, three, and five-year multiple-entry visas to Americans.”
Nigeria started this visa agreement with the U.S. on March 1, 2023. Under it, Americans can get five-year tourist visas and three-year visas for diplomats and government officials. Ambassador Itegboje said President Bola Tinubu’s administration fully supports this visa policy. He believes it will strengthen economic and cultural ties between both countries. The U.S. even praised Nigeria for following the agreed terms so far.
In New York, Ambassador Abubakar Jidda, Nigeria’s Consul-General, confirmed nothing has changed. He said frequent travellers often get three to five-year visas, while first-time visitors usually get two-year visas. Atlanta’s Consul-General, Ambassador Auwalu Namadina, said the same thing. There has been no change, and Nigeria remains committed to giving five-year multiple-entry visas to Americans.
Overall, Nigeria is still issuing these visas as usual. The shortest visa duration for Americans remains two years. Nigerian missions encourage tourists and business visitors to keep coming. This is good news for anyone worried about visa issues lately.
