Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of the late gospel singer Osinachi, has been sentenced to death by hanging for her murder. The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja delivered the judgment on Monday, marking the end of a long and emotional legal battle.

Justice Nwosu-Iheme ruled that Nwachukwu was responsible for his wife’s death, stating that the evidence presented during the trial was enough to convict him of culpable homicide. Osinachi passed away in April 2022, and her death sparked national outrage and calls for justice, especially from the gospel music community.

The court heard testimonies from 17 witnesses, including two of the couple’s children. Prosecutors also presented numerous documents to back their case. Nwachukwu, who denied the charges, took the stand in his own defence and brought forward four witnesses and some documents in an effort to clear his name.

Despite a plea for mercy from his lawyer, Reginald Nwali, the court was firm in its judgment. The prosecutor, Aderonke Imala, insisted that the seriousness of the offence demanded the full weight of the law.

Along with the death sentence for count one, Nwachukwu received multiple jail terms on other counts, ranging from six months to three years, and was fined hundreds of thousands of naira. The charges included physical abuse, intimidation, and cruelty against his wife and children.

Osinachi was best known for her powerful vocals on the gospel hit “Ekwueme.” Her death shocked fans and sparked national conversations around domestic violence.

This judgment brings some closure to her family and supporters, as the justice system delivers a firm response to a case that gripped the nation.
