Nigerian music star Oludipe David, better known as Spyro, has revealed the emotional and psychological challenges he faced growing up, especially the deep-seated fear of failure instilled by his father’s harsh words.

Speaking during an emotional interview with media veteran Frank Edoho, Spyro recalled how his father often corrected him with negative remarks, constantly labelling him a failure. These experiences caused Spyro to internalise that identity, leaving him battling low self-esteem and atychiphobia an intense fear of failure.
He admitted that during his secondary school years, he struggled academically and feared he wouldn’t be able to complete university. “I thought I was going to die broke,” he shared. “My dad contributed to that fear. He took every chance to tell me I was a failure.”
Spyro nearly abandoned his music career. Before his breakthrough, he pivoted to interior design, believing he might never succeed in music. However, he experienced a turning point when he built a personal relationship with God, which helped him reclaim his confidence and purpose.
His fortunes changed in 2022 when Who Is Your Guy went viral. The 2023 remix with Tiwa Savage elevated him to stardom and earned him the Best Collaboration award at the 16th Headies.
Spyro’s journey from self-doubt to success reflects the resilience of the human spirit.
