Nigerian singer and global music icon, Tiwa Savage, has addressed widespread claims suggesting she intentionally released her 2021 sex tape for publicity. In a candid interview with American radio station Hot 97, Tiwa firmly rejected the narrative and opened up about the emotional trauma she faced after the video went viral.
The video surfaced after Tiwa refused to comply with a blackmail attempt. Instead of gaining support, she faced intense criticism from both the public and people with influential platforms. Many blamed her for the incident, assuming she leaked the video herself to gain attention.
Tiwa expressed her disappointment at how people failed to see her as a victim. She explained that the experience left her emotionally shaken, and the accusations only deepened her pain.
“I was heavily criticized after the tape leaked,” Tiwa said during the interview. “Some people believed I did it for sympathy or relevance. If I wanted to go viral intentionally, I would have done it differently. I would’ve used better lighting, worn proper lingerie, and made sure my facial expressions were right.”
She highlighted the need for society to show more empathy, especially when individuals face situations beyond their control.
