Egusi Beats Nigerians to Space, Becomes First Item in Orbit

Who would’ve thought egusi would be the first Nigerian to make it to space? In a twist no one saw coming, egusi melon seeds sourced from Oyo State have now become the first item from Nigeria—and West Africa—to reach orbit. While actual Nigerian astronauts are still waiting for liftoff, this soup essential is already floating aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, headed for the International Space Station.

The space-bound egusi is part of a global science mission tagged “Emerging Space Nations: Space for Agriculture and Agriculture for Space.” The goal is to study how culturally important crops react to space conditions, including microgravity and radiation. The project is led by Nigerian space scientist Dr. Temidayo Oniosun in partnership with Jaguar Space and The Karman Project.

According to Dr. Oniosun, this is a historic moment for Nigeria. “This is the first time any object from Nigeria will enter orbit. Egusi was selected to represent Nigeria for both its cultural and scientific relevance,” he said.

Alongside egusi, seeds of Egyptian cotton, Armenian pomegranate, and Pakistani wheat are also onboard for comparison. The findings could improve how we grow food during space travel and help boost climate-resilient farming back on Earth.

Egusi’s inclusion isn’t just about science—it also shines a spotlight on the seed’s value in Nigerian cuisine and rural life. It’s a big moment for a small seed.

So, while Nigerians dream of becoming astronauts, egusi has already packed its bags, boarded a rocket, and is chilling in orbit. No visa, no stress—just vibes.
