The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has officially announced a fresh upward review of the cost of obtaining the Nigerian Standard Passport, and the news has already sparked plenty of online reactions.
In a statement released by the Service Public Relations Officer, ACI AS Akinlabi, on Thursday, the new price structure will take effect from September 1, 2025, and will only affect applications made within Nigeria.
Under the new fee, the 32-page passport with 5-year validity will now cost N100,000, while the 64-page passport with 10-year validity will go for N200,000. For Nigerians in the diaspora, the fee remains unchanged at $150 for the 32-page booklet and $230 for the 64-page booklet.
According to Nigeria Immigration, the upward review is aimed at maintaining the quality and security of the Nigerian passport while making sure the document remains accessible for citizens.
This development, however, has left many Nigerians concerned, especially since it comes barely a year after the last adjustment in September 2024. Back then, the 32-page passport jumped from N35,000 to N50,000, while the 64-page booklet doubled from N70,000 to N100,000.
The agency explained at the time that the increases were necessary to sustain production costs, improve service delivery, and reduce fraudulent practices. With this latest announcement, however, conversations online suggest that citizens are worried about affordability, especially with the current economic situation.
Still, the Immigration Service insists the new pricing is a step towards ensuring the Nigerian passport continues to meet international standards and remains a strong global travel document.
