According to Omawumi, Cobhams called her unexpectedly and invited her to record a song. At the time, she didn’t realize the significance of the opportunity. “He said, ‘Omawumi, this is Cobhams Asuquo’ you know how he funkifies his name. He told me there was a song he wanted me to do. He said it might not become anything right away, but we should just go with it,” she explained.

She recorded the track, and shortly after, an agency picked it up for a major campaign. That move landed her a two-year brand ambassadorship. “Cobhams taught me so much about delivery, performance, and posture,” she added.

Omawumi, who rose to fame after finishing as runner-up on Idols West Africa in 2007, credits Cobhams as one of the few people who truly saw her potential from the beginning. Their collaboration not only brought her into the spotlight but also opened doors to endorsement deals and future music projects.

Cobhams Asuquo, widely respected for his work with Asa, Timi Dakolo, and Waje, has produced some of Omawumi’s most memorable songs and continues to be a key figure in the Nigerian music scene.

Omawumi’s journey shows how a single collaboration can spark a wave of success.
