Nigerian singer Waje has opened up about why she stopped communicating with the father of her daughter. Speaking on the Honest Bunch podcast, she revealed that the man initially denied responsibility for her pregnancy when she was just 16 years old.
Waje recalled that she hid the pregnancy from her mother until she was five months gone. When she and her family eventually informed the man’s relatives, he rejected the pregnancy, insisting he wasn’t responsible. Years later, he reached out to apologize and asked to be part of their daughter’s life.
According to Waje, she agreed in principle but asked him to take full responsibility by legally filing for his daughter since he is a Canadian citizen. They both agreed to conduct a DNA test, but he delayed it and eventually stopped communicating altogether. By 2015, she said, all contact between them had ended.
The singer explained that she decided to cut him off to protect her daughter’s emotional well-being. She clarified that her choice was not out of bitterness but out of concern for stability and peace in her daughter’s life. “Sometimes, when single parents, especially mothers, deny access to the other parent, it’s not about anger,” she said. “It’s because that person could destabilize the child.”
Waje stressed that her focus has always been her daughter’s happiness, regardless of her own experiences.
Waje’s story reveals the emotional strength required of single mothers facing difficult choices. Her decision to protect her daughter’s peace demonstrates maturity, responsibility, and unconditional love showing that parenthood often means choosing emotional safety over reconciliation.
