Mercedes-Benz has officially unveiled the Vision Iconic, a futuristic concept vehicle featuring breakthrough “solar paint” capable of generating up to 7,450 miles of driving range annually. The debut on January 25, 2026, also marks the final project of Chief Design Officer Gorden Wagener, who is set to depart the company after three decades.
The vehicle’s primary innovation is a wafer-thin photovoltaic skin integrated directly into its reflective exterior. This solar paint allows the car to absorb energy continuously while driving, parked, or even sitting in a sun-filled garage. According to Mercedes-Benz, coating a vehicle the size of a mid-size SUV could yield thousands of miles of “free” range each year under ideal conditions.
Beyond its energy-harvesting body, the Vision Iconic introduces neuromorphic computing, a hardware architecture inspired by the human brain. The company claims this technology reduces the energy consumption of AI and autonomous driving tasks by up to 90 percent, addressing one of the biggest challenges facing advanced automated systems.
Speaking on the vehicle’s design, Gorden Wagener said:
“With its hood that seems to give it a majestic presence, flowing sculptural lines, and a touch of Art Deco, it embodies the pure essence of Mercedes-Benz.”
He further described the concept as:
“a manifesto for the future,”
blending the brand’s 1930s heritage with:
“groundbreaking innovations such as neuromorphic computing, steer-by-wire, and solar paint.”
The Vision Iconic also features Level 4 highly automated driving, allowing the interior to function as a lounge-like theater. The cabin replaces traditional controls with hyper-analog elements, including deep blue velvet seating and a floating glass instrument structure.
While the car remains a showpiece, Mercedes-Benz says the solar paint and neuromorphic computing technologies are intended to set new standards for the next generation of luxury electric vehicles.
