Kunle Afolayan is a Nigerian actor, producer, and film director widely credited with elevating the technical and storytelling standards of modern Nollywood cinema.

Born on September 30, 1975, in Lagos, Nigeria, Afolayan comes from a storied filmmaking family: his father, Adeyemi Josiah Afolayan, known professionally as Ade Love, was a pioneering Nigerian actor and traveling theatre performer. Kunle initially pursued a career away from the arts, earning an economics degree at the University of Lagos and working as a banker, before resigning in 2005 to pursue filmmaking full-time, later training at the New York Film Academy.

His directorial debut came with the 2006 Yoruba-language thriller Irapada, but it was his 2009 film The Figurine that marked a turning point for the industry, winning multiple awards and demonstrating what higher production values could achieve in Nollywood. He followed it with a string of acclaimed titles including Phone Swap, October 1, and Citation, alongside the ambitious Aníkúlápó franchise, which further built his reputation as one of Nigeria’s most meticulous filmmakers.

Afolayan is the founder and CEO of Golden Effects Pictures, established in 2005, through which he has produced the bulk of his work. In 2021, he expanded his footprint in the industry by launching the KAP Film Village & Resort, a creative hub designed to support Nigerian filmmakers with production infrastructure.

Often referred to as ‘the Kubrick of Lagos’ for his exacting approach to filmmaking, Afolayan has represented Nigeria at international film festivals including the African Film Festival in New York and the Durban International Film Festival, and remains one of the central figures credited with pushing Nollywood toward cinema-grade production in the streaming era.
