Early Life
Oluwakayode Junior Balogun, professionally known as Barry Jhay, was born on February 13, 1993, in Ibadan, Oyo State, and raised in Lagos. He comes from a prestigious Yoruba musical lineage.
His grandfather, I.K. Dairo, was a legendary Juju musician, and his father, Sikiru Ololade Ayinde Barrister, pioneered Fuji music. Growing up in this deeply musical environment sparked Barry Jhay’s passion for music from an early age. He began recording music at just five years old and often cited his father’s performances as a major source of inspiration.
Career
Barry Jhay made his breakthrough in 2018 with the release of “Aiye,” a hit single that earned him wide recognition. The song, which explores the cyclical nature of life, resonated with audiences for its cultural depth and emotional weight. In 2020, he released his debut studio album, “Barry Back,” featuring standout tracks like “Ashe She” and “Ma So Pe.” The album also included a collaboration with Nigerian superstar Davido. Following the album’s success, Barry Jhay signed with Cash Nation Entertainment and began working with notable artists such as Bad Boy Timz, Rhaman Jago, Lyta, and Jawton.
Barry Jhay works as a sound engineer. His music goes beyond entertainment, addressing spiritual and social themes rooted in Yoruba tradition. Tracks like “Aiye” revive Yoruba cultural values while also urging compassion, self-belief, and reflection.
