Early Life
Falz, born Folarin Falana on 27 October 1990 in Mushin, Lagos State, hails from a family of lawyers and human rights activists, with his parents Funmi and Femi Falana being prominent figures in Nigerian society.
He attended St. Leo’s Catholic Primary School in Ikeja and Olashore International School in Osun State for his basic and secondary education.
Falz later graduated with an LLB honors degree in Law from the University of Reading in England.
After completing his studies at the Nigerian Law School in Abuja, he was called to the bar in 2012.
Career
Falz started his music career as a hobby in secondary school, forming the group “The School Boys.” He released his mixtape Shakara: The Mixtape in 2009, followed by his debut single Wahz Up Guy in 2011. Tracks like High Class and Currency helped boost his career.
In 2014, he dropped his debut album Wazup Guy, featuring artists like Olamide, Show Dem Camp, and Yemi Alade. He followed with Stories That Touch in 2015, which earned critical acclaim.
Falz expanded into acting, winning “Best Actor in a Comedy” at the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards for his role in Jenifa’s Diary.
He teamed up with Simi in 2016 for the Chemistry EP and released 27 in 2017, with hits like Bhad Baddo Baddest.
His 2018 track This Is Nigeria sparked controversy and was banned by the National Broadcasting Commission. In 2023, he released Yakubu, criticizing the 2023 elections.
His music continues to tackle social and political issues while evolving creatively.
