Early Life
Chidi Geoff Azubuike Mokeme Jr. was born on 17 March 1972 in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria, to Geoffrey Azubuike Mokeme Sr., an insurance broker, and Angelina Nwokolo Mokeme, a school teacher and administrator. He is the eldest of four siblings. He attended Salvation Army Primary School in Surulere, Lagos State, before proceeding to Federal Government College, Minna, Niger State, for his secondary education, where he was an active member of the school’s drama club. He went on to study at the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, earning a National Diploma in Computer Science Technology, before completing a Higher National Diploma at Yaba College of Technology.
Career
Chidi Mokeme began his career as a model in 1988, representing a number of well-known brands, including telecoms giant Vodafone. He made his acting debut in the films ‘Goodbye Tomorrow’ and ‘Burden of Vengeance,’ before formally entering Nollywood in 2003. He rose to national prominence hosting the first two editions of the reality adventure show ‘Gulder Ultimate Search,’ a role that made him a household name well beyond his film work.
Fluent in Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa, Mokeme built a reputation as one of Nollywood’s most versatile actors, appearing in more than 200 films including ‘Agony of a Mother,’ ‘Abuja Connection’ and ’76’ (2016), in which he played a soldier. In late 2016, while promoting ’76,’ he began experiencing facial muscle weakness and stepped away from acting for treatment, a period he has since spoken openly about as one of personal adversity.
Mokeme staged a widely celebrated comeback with his lead role as the ruthless kingpin “Scar” in the Netflix series ‘Shanty Town,’ a domineering, commanding performance that redefined his career and repositioned him as a leading man rather than a supporting player. He followed it with further acclaimed antagonist roles, including Gaza in ‘Tรฒkunbรฒ’ and the enigmatic Teacher in ‘To Kill a Monkey,’ cementing his standing as, in the words of one profile, Nollywood’s “Crime King.” He now has more Netflix and Prime Video Nigerian Original titles to his name than most of his contemporaries, and fans have taken to calling him “The King of Originals.”

Chidi Mokeme has received Best Actor nominations and wins across nearly every major Nigerian and continental award show. In 2023, he was selected as a recipient of the AFRIFF Special Honors Recognition Award and the EbonyLife Nollywood 100 Award, recognition of both his career longevity and his post-comeback resurgence.
Personal Life
Chidi Mokeme married Dr Jean Chinwe Olumba, a US-based physician and pharmacist, on 28 April 2012; the couple share a son, Noah. He has another son, Emem Daniel Mokeme, from a previous relationship with journalist Adia Ukoyen.
