Funke Akindele, widely recognized as Jenifa, commands attention as a Nigerian filmmaker, actress, director, producer, and politician. Born on August 24, 1977, in Ikorodu, Lagos State, she launched her acting career in 1998 with a role in the television series I Need to Know, which aired until 2002.
Career
She skyrocketed to fame in 2009 after winning the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in Jenifa. Funke Akindele brought the character back in 2015 with the hit TV series Jenifa’s Diary, earning multiple Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) for Best Actress in a Comedy in 2016, 2017, 2020, and 2022. With six AMVCA wins, Akindele holds the record as the most nominated actress and filmmaker in the award’s history.
She also made history at the Nigerian box office as the second director to gross over a billion naira. Her films Battle on Buka Street ₦668 million in 2022 and Omo Ghetto: The Saga ₦636 million in 2020 top the list of highest-grossing films in Nigeria.
Funke Akindele is also Known for her comedic brilliance, animated Yoruba-English accent, and unforgettable characters, Akindele remains a household name.
In addition, In 2022, she entered politics as the deputy governorship candidate in Lagos State under the People’s Democratic Party. Beyond entertainment, she champions women’s rights and empowers young women through her television platform.
